The Initiative

The Aquaculture Innovation Network is a new initiative supported by the European Commission, to enhance innovation and technology transfer within the European aquaculture sector and to support small and medium sized companies in the sector to develop and adopt new technologies and practices.

Evidence from many sectors has shown that companies continually need to innovate, to remain competitive and to meet the increasingly sophisticated needs of consumers.

Innovation & Technology Transfer

Meeting the challenges requires continual innovation with the development of new products and processes, and new approaches to organisation and management. The efficiency of the whole sector improves when innovations can be readily transferred to other companies and across national boundaries.

Networking & Collaboration

Although competition is widely understood to improve efficiency within a sector, and plays an important role in any companys strategy, the benefits of industrial collaboration are also increasingly recognised. Building links between companies that allow for technology transfer, or specific improvements in performance can be highly beneficial, as can a greater sharing of problem solving skills.

Project Activities

The project is organising a series of events to promote innovation and technology transfer in European aquaculture, and is building this web site as a longer-term resource for innovation within the sector. After an initial appraisal phase, the project is focusing especially on small aquaculture businesses and developing trade and technology transfer between established and new member states of the EU. Activities are also concentrating on improving market orientation, improving health management and the beneficial use of environmental control technologies.
